Oh, oh, oh, Rupert Penry-Jones gets a BIG vote from me. I'm still trying to recover from his smoldering Captain Wentworth in Jane Austen's Persuasion.
Sorry, came over all girlie (and at my age too!!). I'll go and have a quiet lie down...
Katherine on 07 Jan 2010 at 2:42 p.m. GMT
Julian Ovenden & Michael Fassbender (both from After the Funeral, coincidentally) are gorgeous, I think...
I've never really seen the appeal of Rupert Penry-Jones, I'm afraid. I've always found him rather bland.
Bundle_ on 07 Jan 2010 at 4:28 p.m. GMT
stylestocurtainJJ Field without a doubt as Simon Doyle. Phwoarr!
Stylestocurtain, welcome to the boards! I can see we'll be great friends as I'm a huge JJ Feild fan and whole-heartedly agree w/ you that he's the most gorgeous actor to have played in Christie's adapts!
A close second would have to be Toby Stephens who was in Five Little Pigs.
To Jill: I can see that we shall once again resume our discussion of handsome AC characters!
LizzieJ on 07 Jan 2010 at 4:38 p.m. GMT
Tom Mison (Poirot: Third Girl) and Tom Riley (Poirot: Appointment with Death and Miss Marple: Ordeal by Innocence) would be my two picks, along with Matthew Macfadyen in Miss Marple: A Pocketful of Rye. All gorgeous and incredibly fine actors as well!

Where do I begin LOL !!
Michael Fassbender (After the Funeral)
Rupert Penry Jones (Sad Cypress)
Adam Garcia (Body in the Library)
Adam Croasdell (Cat Among the Pigeons)
Tristan Gemill (Cards on the Table)
Elliot Cowan (Taken at the Flood/They Do it With Mirrors)
Marc Warren (Five Little Pigs)
Aiden Gillen (Five Little Pigs)
James D'Arcy (Mystery of the Blue Train/ Moving Finger)
Julian Ovenden (After the Funeral)
Greg Wise (Towards Zero)
J J FIELD (Death on the Nile) COS HE'S PERFECT IN EVERY WAY !!
RUSELL TOVEY (Murder is Easy/ Evil Under the Sun) EXTRA BROWNIE POINTS FOR BEING OPENLY GAY !!
BUT MY FAVOURITE OF ALL - PAUL NICHOLLS (Towards Zero) and not just because he was born in the same town as me !
Puffinjill on 07 Jan 2010 at 7 p.m. GMT
Bundle, my old friend, I knew you would be in on this discussion soon!! And Katherine, have you seen Persuasion? I didn't think too much of his Roddy in Sad Cypress but my knees still go weak at the thought of his Captain Wentworth!!! Still, good to see we are all just as divided in these preferences as when we are dicussing the books - after all, it all adds up to a great debate!
I have to say (and I expect Bundle is waiting for me to say it) you left out Richard Armitage from Ordeal By Innocence. Not a fan of that adaptation at all, but I'm always happy to watch Mr Armitage anytime!
I'm going silly again...
McGinty on 07 Jan 2010 at 7:06 p.m. GMT
Oh and HOW could I forget Michael Landes in 4.50 from Paddington !
Bundle_ on 07 Jan 2010 at 9:12 p.m. GMT
I LOVE the Persuasion adapt: it's so sad but ever so romantic! I don't think Rupert Penry Jones is a heart breaker, but he's not bad looking, and he was great as Captain Wentworth and he did look rather nice in that ridding gear.
And yes, I was wondering when you'd mention RA.
And I ust be the only one who thought that Julian Sands didn't look too bad as Thomas Royde in Towards Zero.
Puffinjill on 08 Jan 2010 at 6:31 a.m. GMT
Please don't talk about Rupert Penry-Jones in his riding kit THIS early in the morning. I'm sure it does me no good! And Bundle, I can understand where you are coming from when you mention Julian Sands.....
I'm beginning to think McGinty might overheat in a moment!!!
McGinty on 08 Jan 2010 at 9:15 a.m. GMT
LOL ! Too late Jill - I already have !!
Matthew Goode (A Murder is Announced) Sean Biggerstaff (Why Didn't they ask Evans) Jack Davenport (Body in the Library) Joe Absolom (Mrs McGinty's Dead) and special mention to James Murray and Laurence Fox, for being the only reason I would ever waste 90 minutes of my life by watching The Sittaford Mystery ever again !
Puffinjill on 08 Jan 2010 at 9:23 a.m. GMT
I'm sure this is a terribly sexist thing to say, so nobody listen to me, but isn't it wonderful the way a rather handsome individual can brighten up the most appalling adaptations!!! I'm sure I shouldn't make comments like that, but, hey!, who's listening?!
I shall try to push all these base thoughts from my brain and get back to serious literary discussion............well, at some point.......
McGinty on 08 Jan 2010 at 9:47 a.m. GMT
I wouldn't worry about it Jill - I find that over the years I've managed to watch some real drivel and convince myself that the film was actually high art simply because of the actor in the lead role !
Katherine on 08 Jan 2010 at 9:57 a.m. GMT
@Puffinjill
I thought Penry-Jones was OK in Persuasion. He's just not my type, though. Whenever I see him on TV he just always seems a little, well, dull...
As for Julian Sands, I'm afraid I've never been able to get past what an utterly dreadful actor he is in order to find him remotely attractive! Greg Wise looked good in Towards Zero, but was anyone else disappointed to find how chubby Paul Nicholls had become?
Bundle_ on 08 Jan 2010 at 1:29 p.m. GMT
Oh McGinty! Ho could I forget about James Murray in The Sittaford Mystery! I adore him! Has anyone seen him in "Under The GreenWood Tree"?! Excuse me while I faint!
MissQuin on 08 Jan 2010 at 4:09 p.m. GMT
Talk about a hot topic!!
I havnt seen Under the Greenwood tree, but have wanted to for ages. I didnt like Richard Armitage's character in Marple. I liked him in other programmes such as North and South. Greg Wise, yes! He's even better as Willoughby is Sense and Sensibilty. sigh.
I know its too much to hope Robert Patterson will ever appear in an Agatha Christie?! If he was Mr Quin for instance! I will dream on...
Toby Stephen's was excellent as the tortured soul, it nearly brought tears to my eyes!
Katherine on 08 Jan 2010 at 4:44 p.m. GMT
Looking to the future: do we have any hunks waiting in the wings in the forthcoming Marples and Poirots, do you think?

A completely flippant topic to lighten the mood!
The Poirot series from 2003 and the McKenzie/McEwen Marple series have starred some absolutely gorgeous actors (in no particular order) -
Greg Wise, Rupert Penry-Jones, Joseph Beattie, Sean Biggerstaff, James D'Arcy, Christian Coulson, Matthew Goode, Julian Morris, Jack Davenport, Adam Garcia, Tom Wisdom, Tom Riley, Tom Mison, Adam Croasdell, Julian Ovenden, J J Feild, Alastair McKenzie, Tristan Gemmill (and the list goes on...)
Who gets the most votes?
